A smile makeover can do wonders to improve your confidence with bright, natural, and flawless teeth. However, some cosmetic dentistry procedures take more time than others. Dental veneers are a great way to improve your smile quickly, with the procedure itself taking just one or two appointments.
Before you begin, you will want to schedule an initial consultation, where you can discuss your options with your dentist. If you are concerned about the appearance of your smile in any way, your dentist can offer you options to improve it.
When you come in to see your dentist, they’ll ask about the specific concerns you have about your smile. Dental veneers can provide a beautiful smile by resolving a wide range of imperfections. Discoloration, a chipped tooth, and even gaps or size disparity among your teeth can all be addressed with dental veneers.
Your dentist will carry out an evaluation of your teeth to determine whether dental veneers are the right treatment option. While veneers are highly versatile, there are other cosmetic dentistry treatments available as well. Bonding, whitening, or other options could be better suited to your specific needs.
At this consultation, your dentist will also assess the health of your teeth. A tooth that is seriously decayed or damaged generally isn’t a good candidate for veneers. You may need a dental crown or other procedures to ensure ongoing oral health. It’s important that you are in optimal oral health before moving forward with the veneers, and that will be your dentist’s first priority.
If you do decide on dental veneers, your dentist will provide specific instructions about the next steps and schedule your next appointment. They’ll let you know what to expect from the procedure, including how to care for both your temporary veneers and your permanent ones, and what foods you can eat with each of them.
Your first appointment will involve preparation for the placement of your veneers. Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain that sit over the front face of a tooth. This presents a flawless and natural appearance but also requires removing a small amount of material to allow the veneer to sit flat against the tooth and not look unnaturally thick.
The layer your dentist will remove is very thin and only affects part of the enamel. Enamel makes up the hard outer layer that protects the more delicate inner layers of the tooth. In this process, the enamel is not compromised, so your teeth stay protected and healthy. It does, however, mean that porcelain veneers are a permanent solution.
Porcelain veneers are custom-made to match your smile and provide a perfect fit. To achieve that perfect fit, an impression is taken of your tooth after it has been prepared. This could be done with a malleable dental putty that is pressed against the teeth to create a direct physical impression or through highly detailed 3D digital scanning.
Every situation is different and which approach we take in obtaining an impression is tailored to the patient’s specific dental needs. Just know that these impressions are important because they act as the blueprint for crafting your veneers. And every individual tooth is shaped or sized differently from anyone else’s.
After your veneers have been precisely milled to fit your teeth properly, the dentist will check how the veneers fit and make any necessary adjustments. Once they have been honed to perfection, the dentist will etch the surface of your tooth to prepare for the adhesive. This creates a rougher surface that will provide an even stronger bond.
Finally, your veneers will be bonded in place for a long-lasting and beautiful smile. At this point, some very minor adjustments may be necessary, which is why your dentist will ask you to close and open your mouth to assess the fit from multiple angles and ensure an even bite. If all is well, they’ll then polish your new smile, provide you with instructions for care and hygiene, and send you on your way.
